New York City Moves to Decriminalize Marijuana Possession

January 1, 2015 – NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to change the law to make possession of small amounts of marijuana a misdemeanor punishable by a summons like a traffic offense rather than a crime. Marijuana arrests and prosecutions are a major financial drag on the City, the NYPD and the courts. In 2013 alone, the City arrested more than 28,000 people for marijuana possession.
