Vermont May Become Next State to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

January 1, 2015 – Should Vermont establish a regulated retail market for recreational marijuana? Hearings were held in November and the Legislature will discuss the issue when it reconvenes in January. The debate is expected to rely heavily on the soon-to-be-published report of the Rand Corporation, a think-tank the state hired to study the economic benefits and tax revenues to be realized by establishing a regulated commercial system that treats marijuana like alcohol. And because it’s the first study to address the economic effects of legalization within an individual state, the Rand report is likely to prove relevant in other states contemplating legalization.
